[Interpretation/Affect] Afr

[Interpretation/Affect] Afr

Aliases

  • Afr
  • Affective Ratio

Definition

Afr compares responses given to cards VIII, IX, and X with responses given to cards I through VII. In interpretation, it is used to estimate how readily the person approaches or withdraws from stimulation with stronger affective or chromatic tone.

Interpretation

  • If Afr is low, there may be less readiness to approach emotionally loaded situations.
  • If Afr is high, there may be greater openness to emotionally salient stimulation.
  • Its meaning improves when it is read with EB, Lambda, and the broader style of affective expression.
  • Under recent stress, Afr can temporarily drop.

Cautions

  • If total responses are low, the ratio can fluctuate too much.
  • High Afr does not by itself mean healthy affective functioning, and low Afr does not automatically mean pathological avoidance.
  • Card-by-card productivity differences should also be checked before drawing strong conclusions.
