[Interpretation/Upper Section] W

[Interpretation/Upper Section] W

Aliases

  • W
  • whole responses
  • whole-card responses

Definition

W is the frequency of responses given to the whole blot. In interpretation it shows how much the person tries to take in the stimulus field as a whole and whether that broad focus seems useful or not.

Interpretation

  • An adequate W may go with the ability to take in broader context.
  • A high W may suggest a tendency to begin with the whole or to work in larger units.
  • A low W may suggest greater emphasis on details than on the total configuration.

Cautions

  • High W does not automatically mean efficient synthesis; DQ, FQ, W:M, and Zd still matter.
  • Low W does not by itself equal narrowness; it may coexist with a practical, detail-oriented style.
  • If W is high while Dd is also high, broad scanning may coexist with dispersion.
